Adolescents' experiences after blood cancer diagnosis: a phenomenological study

Adolescents with cancer face complex problems and have special needs. They are in a critical phase of their development in which illness is an unexpected condition that contradicts their characteristic sense of invulnerability.

The period between diagnosis and the start of treatment is critical for adolescents and their families and corresponds to a challenging existential experience marked by high emotional suffering, which will determine the development of coping strategies and subsequent decision-making.

Especially in the field of hematology-oncology, there is a lack of empirical knowledge on how patients experience the period after diagnosis, the meanings they attach to the situation, and the relational aspects. Considering that the lack of knowledge does not favor the policy of differentiation advocated in the health care of adolescents, it is essential to master this knowledge as it will intentionally facilitate empathic processes and the provision of emotional support in the nursing care of adolescents.

Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, this empirical qualitative research aims to understand the experiences of adolescents with blood cancer in the post-diagnosis phase.

The sample will include adolescents who meet the inclusion/exclusion criteria. In line with other studies focusing on similar phenomena, it is expected that saturation will be achieved with 8-16 individual and voluntary interviews. The interviews will follow a script of questions designed to elicit adolescents' participation while respecting basic formal and ethical principles. An inductive analytical procedure will be followed, using Giorgi's Descriptive Phenomenological Psychology method and the QSR NVivo software.
