The role of nurses in pharmaceutical care (PC) is not transparent and varies between European countries. Similarly, nursing education lacks a clear description of specific learning outcomes, and curricula in PC vary widely in most European countries. The aim of this project is to achieve more transparency and equity in the role of European nurses in PC and to build strong links between research, education, practice, and policy, focusing on PC as a crucial part of therapy for most patients.
The project aims to characterize the current practices of nurses in PC and to conduct a SWOT analysis, interviewing nurses, pharmacists, and physicians about their roles in clinical practice. It will be developed in two stages.
In the first stage, a qualitative study will be conducted (at least 6 interviews per professional group with nurses, physicians, and pharmacists). In Portugal, three interviews will be carried out with each professional group (nurses, pharmacists, and physicians), involving at least four settings: hospitals, community, home care, mental health institutions, and professional associations. A minimum of 24 interviews is required (2 interviews x 3 professionsal groups x 4 settings). The interviews will be recorded and will last between 45 and 60 minutes. The first interview of each professional group and setting will be transcribed into English for coding across the 14 countries. Data will be collected between December 2018 and March 2019. Interviewers will be trained for data collection in a one-week training course at the University of Antwerp. Data will be processed through content analysis using Microsoft Word and NVivo.
In the second stage, a quantitative cross-sectional study will be conducted in nursing curricula and nursing students (final competencies) to validate the interprofessional model of nurses' role in PC.
