The objective of this project is to conduct a comprehensive exploratory and descriptive study to ascertain the level of comfort experienced by the families of patients admitted to a rehabilitation unit.
The extant literature has demonstrated that "comfort" is one of the elements of care, rooted in its origin and evolution (Apóstolo, 2009).
Irrespective of its context, the "comfort" of patients and their families is a nurse-sensitive outcome and, consequently, an important indicator of the quality of care that should be duly evaluated.
The present study will adopt a quantitative approach, utilizing a questionnaire to characterize patients and their family members/caregivers (Family APGAR Score and Graffar-Méndez Castellanos Socio-Economic Scale). Additionally, it will employ the Barthel Index for Activities of Daily Living and the Holistic Comfort Questionnaire (HCQ) - Family, which has been validated for the Portuguese population, to assess the illness situation of individuals admitted to a rehabilitation unit.
The results of the study will allow for direct measurement of the level of comfort of the families of hospitalized patients and indirect measurement of the impact of nursing interventions on this level.
