Nursing interventions for victims of domestic violence in the emergency department (Master's thesis)

According to the World Health Organization (2002), domestic violence is recognized as a serious public health problem due to its harmful consequences for victims, families, and society in general. At present, the visibility of this phenomenon is increasing in Portugal and, consequently, the measures adopted to combat it. Its relevance and topicality, as well as the need to deepen the knowledge available on the responses of health care services to victims of domestic violence, led to the development of this project, based on a descriptive study with a qualitative approach.

Objectives - To describe the role of nurses in dealing with victims of domestic violence, to analyze the information gathered by nurses during the initial assessment of victims of domestic violence, to examine the aspects perceived by nurses as facilitating or hindering the approach and intervention with victims of domestic violence, and to identify nursing interventions that promote the safety and empowerment of victims of domestic violence in the context of a hospital emergency department.

Participants - Emergency department nurses from a general hospital with experience in caring for victims of domestic violence who volunteered to participate after giving informed consent. Individual semi-structured interviews with the nurses will be used for data collection.

Expected results - Identify a basis for reflection that will raise awareness of domestic violence in training processes in health care services and underline the importance of integrating this topic into the clinical practice of health professionals, especially in the emergency setting.
