Since 2004, the Portuguese National Health Program has been paying more and more attention to palliative care (Mendes, Silva, & Santos, 2012). However, according to the World Health Organization, Portugal and Norway are the countries with the lowest provision of pediatric palliative care in Western Europe (Jorge, Carrondo, & Lopes, 2016).
Children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families have multiple, diverse, variable, and specific needs that include physical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions (Jorge et al., 2016).
This study aims to identify the needs of parents and children with palliative care needs. To achieve this objective, a descriptive qualitative study will collect data from interviews with parents of children in palliative care in the central and northern regions of Portugal. The non-probability snowball sampling technique will be used to select participants. Content analysis will be carried out using template analysis.
Identifying and describing the needs felt by parents in relation to themselves, their children and the rest of the family will allow the implementation of interventions tailored to the real needs of these individuals (covering different dimensions) with the aim of improving their quality of life.
