Patient safety, particularly the occurrence of adverse events (AEs) during healthcare delivery, is a priority challenge for quality care. Given the multidisciplinary nature of care provided in hospital inpatient services, the crucial role of nurses in promoting safe healthcare is widely recognized. Diagnosing and making professionals aware of this reality is a fundamental step in developing improvement projects.
In 2012, we developed a scale called “Adverse Events Associated with Nursing Practice” (EEAPE) to assess nurses' perceptions in this area. It includes two subscales assessing six types of AEs and two general perception indicators. The nursing practices subscale includes 40 items across 10 dimensions, assessing the process of adherence to preventive practices, as well as failures to apply professional standards in six areas of care: vigilance and clinical judgment, advocacy, falls, pressure ulcers, medication errors, and HAIs. The adverse events subscale consists of 12 items grouped into six dimensions. This scale has shown good psychometric properties and has proved useful in examining this reality. Since its publication (Castilho & Parreira, 2012), several nurses have requested authorization to use it in their master's dissertations or doctoral theses. The aim of this project is to expand the study network to the Spanish-speaking community, making it possible to share knowledge and strategies for improvement.
The project will be carried out in two phases: first, the cultural validation of the EEAPE; second, its dissemination and the expansion of the research network.
