Becoming a parent is one of the most important and challenging roles in the life cycle, especially for first-time parents. It is also one of the most significant events in a couple's life, usually accompanied by profound changes in the family system.
The postpartum period, as pointed out by Mendes (2007, p.1), is characterized by great emotional vulnerability on the part of both parents in general and women in particular. Coping with all the demands made on the mother to care for her child can hinder her ability to respond effectively and, at the same time, make her more vulnerable to the onset of physical and emotional disorders that affect her and the child's well-being. Therefore, the social need to support positive parenting has led to the emergence of parenting education programs designed as educational and preventive interventions or as responses to crisis situations with mothers and fathers from different socio-cultural and economic backgrounds.
Family support is almost non-existent, and difficulties arise after leaving the maternity hospital (which is happening earlier and earlier). This is when parents most need the help of health professionals, especially nurses. Therefore, there is a need to develop and implement parenting intervention programs tailored to the needs of parents. Nurses play a leading role with parents from prenatal care through the postpartum period, educating and empowering them in this new stage of their lives. It is essential that nurses continue to implement these interventions and help parents overcome the various challenges that may arise.
