The concerns of first-time mothers during the first six months postpartum

The birth of a child requires women to adapt to a new role and the specific characteristics of their child, a process that can be more or less difficult during the postpartum period.

In this sense, the transition to motherhood/parenthood requires knowledge of puerperal women's concerns in order to plan interventions that anticipate and promote this transition and contribute to the development of families’ autonomy at this stage of their life cycle.

This study aims to 1) analyze the influence of infant characteristics, return to work, socio-demographic variables (mothers' age, socioeconomic conditions, and education), adult attachment, and obstetric complications during pregnancy and/or childbirth on first-time mothers' concerns during the first six months postpartum, and 2) evaluate the change and stability of first-time mothers' concerns during the first six months postpartum.

This is a longitudinal descriptive correlational Level II quantitative study with a sample consisting of first-time mothers who gave birth to a single fetus after a full-term pregnancy. The dependent variable corresponds to first-time mothers' concerns, and the independent variables are socio-demographic (mothers’ age, education, and socioeconomic conditions), adult attachment, infant characteristics, and obstetric complications during pregnancy and/or childbirth. A sociodemographic characterization questionnaire, the Portuguese preliminary version of the Mothers' Concerns Questionnaire - MoCQ, by Kaitz (2007), the Portuguese version [EVA] of the Adult Attachment Scale (Canavarro, 1995), and the Portuguese version of the Infant Characteristics Questionnaire (Pires, 1994) will be used as instruments.
